세속적 인 휴일 : 설날인 음력 1월 1일과 구분하기 위하여 양력 1월 1일을 양력설이라고 한다. 양력설은 신정(新正)이라고도 하는데, 이것은 일본에서 와레키(和曆)를 양력으로 바꿀 때 음력설을 구정(正)이라고 부르면서 만든 말이다.[4] 대한민국에서는 1989년까지는 이날부터 1월 3일까지 연휴였으나, 1989년에 설날이 3일 연휴(설날 전날, 설날, 설날 다음날)가 되면서 1990년에 1월 3일이 공휴일에서 제외되었고, 1999년에 1월 2일이 공휴일에서 제외되어 현재는 1월 1일 하루만 공휴일이다. 대한민국에서는 설날처럼 일가친척이 모이지는 않더라도 가정에서는 보통 떡국을 먹으며, 일부 가정은 양력설을 쇠기도 한다. 세배가 아닌 다른 새해 인사는 양력설 즈음에 하는 것이 보편화되어 가는 추세이며, 보신각 타종과 전국 각지의 해돋이 행사 등 묵은 해를 보내고 새해를 맞이하는 새해 첫날의 의미는 양력설이 설날보다 매우 강하다.
